  • Prof Amanda Porterfield – Author of ‘Healing in the History of Christianity’
  • Prof Mark Roberts – Lecturer in Biochemistry and Biomedical science at The University of Oxford

We will be looking at the history of healing within the Christian church; how our inherited genetics shape our health; the impact of past experiences on present physical, mental and spiritual health; the ways that our historical holy places can impact our flourishing today; how historical frameworks of injustice have profound health impacts and what we can all do to face the future in a healthy way

Wendy Lloyd will invite you to gently journal throughout this series. Through spiritual journalling we will unpack the material from the experts and help us apply their insights to our own lives and contexts. And through journaling about our own past we will experience healing and growth in the present.

Why journaling?

We have often provided prompt questions for journalling as part of our regular GoHealth Community resourcing. In this series we want to elevate this practice as a central part of our Healing Histories journey.

And before those of you who are not yet journal keepers click away…be reassured that we understand journaling to take many forms; bullet, prayer, poetry, artistic, travel, reflective, gratitude, etc., Some folk might even keep a shoe box journal, filling a shoe box with memorabilia from significant moments on life’s journey.  Journaling is not only writing or typing.  However, there is something about writing that we think is worth paying attention to.

According to an article in The Journal of Medical Humanities: ‘even brief (expressive) writing sessions can provide surprisingly substantial changes not only in the writers’ psychological but also their physical well-being…Because of the impressive somatic health effects, an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) contends that were there similar outcome evidence about a new drug, “it likely would be in widespread use within a short time” (Spiegel 1999, 1329).1

If you are not already a seasoned journal keeper, or even if you are, the blank page can be a bit intimidating.  To get us started we provide a short ‘getting started with journaling guide’ and our brand new, beautiful GoHealth journal, free to new members of the GoHealth Community and available to buy (with a member discount).

The series will also include: Podcasts, reflections, journal prompts and online gatherings.
