The International Council of Nurses has warned of a “global phenomenon of mass trauma” among nurses working as part of the Covid-19 response.’ Nursing Times, 13th January 2021
Nurturing God
who nourishes our souls
we thank you for nurses,
for their willingness
to go towards
what others avoid,
for their dedication
to tending the sick
and accompanying the dying.
In these deeply difficult days
we pray for their protection –
physically, mentally, emotionally
and that they would be adequately
cared for and supported.
For those feeling overwhelmed,
burnt-out or close to breaking point
we pray for comfort, strength
and a groundswell of support.
For those experiencing PTSD
and other mental health challenges
we pray for accessible help and healing.
For those grieving the loss
of colleagues and far too many patients
we pray for peace that passes understanding.
For those feeling isolated and
concerned about family contracting Covid-19
we pray for connection and companionship.
For those working very long hours
and are constantly anxious about the lack of adequate PPE
we pray for sufficient resources and better provision.
Thank you, O God
for the faithful service of nurses
may they be genuinely respected and appreciated
may they know strength and encouragement
beyond human comprehension.
So help them, God,
Amen.
