A GoHealth guide to avoiding, or recovering, from burnout

Burn like stars
When the Apostle Paul exhorted to the Philippians to ‘shine like stars in the world’ (Philippians 2: 15) he probably didn’t appreciate just how apt the metaphor of stars would be for our fast paced, always on society. To shine like stars is to remain energised, to consistently burn on, when so many are burning out.
Few experiences evoke awe and wonder, and a sense of our place in the universe, quite like contemplating a clear night sky full of stars. Each twinkling star is fuelled by the nuclear fusion of hydrogen to form helium deep in their interiors. The outflow of energy from the central regions of the star provides the pressure necessary to keep the star from collapsing under its own weight, and the energy by which it shines.
The capacity of a star to keep shining is determined by what happens deep in their interiors, in what comes from the centre of their being.
This series on Burnout, from the GoHealth Community, is an invitation to star gaze. To learn from the stars as we seek to burn on rather than burning out, and will include some star inspired questions to reflect on and wrestle with:
- Is there an interior fusion of our calling, our values and our work?
- Can we sustain an outflow of energy without being depleted?
- Is there a sweet spot of pressure that enables us to thrive, rather than collapsing?
- From where do we draw the deep interior energy that keeps us shining like stars in the universe?
- And is there a particular Christian perspective or challenge to the pervasiveness of burnout in our society.
Join us this Autumn as we pause to gaze at, and learn from, the stars. Through a series of prompts, podcasts, practices and prayers we will seek to avoid or recover from burnout. Together, we flourish.
