Spiritual Discernment
In this edition of Chrism we are looking at spiritual discernment and its relationship with the healing ministry. First, a broad and biblically-based overview by the Rev’d Dr Beatrice Brandon, who is the Archbishops’ Adviser for the Healing Ministry and a member of the Guild Council. Within this she notes the important difference between diagnosis and spiritual discernment and we are fortunate to have the expertise of an ordained General Practitioner, Revd Dr Ian Wynne, who provides a very clear account of medical diagnosis and its differentiation from spiritual discernment, especially in relation to mental illness. The insightful article on confession and spiritual discernment in parish ministry, by Rev’d Dr Rowena Pailing, provides a very helpful contrast. Then, by remarkable coincidence, we have a highly complementary article based on the CSTH Summer School, on embodied approaches to spiritual direction, at Holy Rood House
