The Wounded Healer
In this edition of Chrism we are reflecting in a highly seasonal way on the concept of The Wounded Healer, the issue being produced in the Church’s seasons of Lent and Easter when Jesus’ suffering and then triumph over death are uppermost in our minds. The subject is approached in quite distinctive ways by our three distinguished authors. In the first, Bishop George Hacker, who used to edit Chrism, introduces us to the person and work of Henri Nouwen who popularised (if that is the right phrase) the notion of The Wounded Healer through the title of his well known and much appreciated book. We then have ‘a practical guide’ to being a wounded healer by Gretchen Stevens who, for more than twenty years, has dedicated herself to what she describes as the ’messy business’ of healing. Third, Canon Paul Nener, our former Sub-Warden, takes the subject of ‘The Dying Healer’, and includes some exploration of assisted dying. Finally, by coincidence, Elizabeth Baxter’s account of 20 years at Holy Rood House has a similar theme.
