On Saturday 12th January, our Director Gillian Straine led a healing workshop as part of the adult learning program at St. Paul’s Cathedral. It turned out to be one of the most popular workshops they have ever put on, with the room packed and many on the waiting list. In the workshop, Gillian explored the biblical background to the Christian Spiritual Healing tradition and then moved on to cover the healing sacraments, where healing sits in the modern world of medicine and new age alternatives, and promoted the idea that when healing is put at the centre of church mission, people will come. The arguement was put to the test immediately following the workshop, with an Eucharist with healing at 5pm. This was the first time in living memory that the sacraments of healing had been offered at the cathedral in this way. Michael Harvey (in the picture with Gillian) preached a powerful sermon on mission and healing, and the queues for healing meant the service went on much, much longer than expected. It was a powerful day, and really showed the potential for healing minsitry and the need for the church to be leading the way in bringing health and wholeness into the community, and doing it all in the name of Christ.
Michael’s sermon will be printed in the next edition of Guild News. Join now to recieve your copy.
